Olkiluoto 1 & 2 – Finland
“Robotic cleaning helped us meet both safety and operational demands for one of Europe’s most advanced nuclear sites.”
— Maintenance Director, Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant
Olkiluoto 1 and 2 are part of a major Finnish nuclear complex operated by Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO). These reactors provide low-emission electricity to the national grid. As part of their operational mandate, TVO is responsible for maintaining high safety standards across all water systems, including reactor cavities and spent fuel pools. These areas require precision cleaning to remove fine sediments and prevent contamination. TVO’s use of robotic systems like U-DEC supports reliable plant operations while reducing human exposure during maintenance intervals and outage procedures.
The Challenge
During scheduled outages, cleaning of the reactor tanks traditionally required complete drainage followed by 24–48 hours of aerosol ventilation before maintenance crews could safely enter.
The Weda Solution
Following successful Swedish deployments, the U-DEC robot was introduced at Olkiluoto for submerged cleaning of tank walls and floors — drastically reducing the release of hazardous aerosols.
