SSAB Oxelösund – Sweden

“Using the YT-800 means no more divers, no more downtime, and far safer operations.”
— Utility Supervisor, SSAB Oxelösund

SSAB is a leading Nordic steel manufacturer with high energy and water demands. Its Oxelösund site operates open reservoirs and cooling basins that must remain free of iron ore residue, scale, and sediment to ensure continuous operation of blast furnaces. The site experiences heavy particulate accumulation due to open-air processes and high water turnover. Cleaning these basins is mission-critical. Robotic sediment removal helps avoid overheating, maintains thermal efficiency, and reduces labor exposure to hazardous environments. The system also helps prevent unscheduled shutdowns in a high-throughput production line.

The Challenge

Sedimentation build-up in the cooling reservoirs was leading to reduced efficiency and increased load on intake pumps. The company previously used divers for cleaning — a costly, high-risk method that disrupted operations.

The Weda Solution

Weda’s YT-800 enabled SSAB to eliminate the need for divers and clean the reservoir while in operation. It ensured safe, remote-controlled sludge removal without any water disposal or human entry.
