Sydney Water – Australia
“Weda’s VR-600 gave us a way to clean sediment from drinking water reservoirs without affecting supply.”
— Maintenance Coordinator, Sydney Water
Sydney Water operates one of the largest urban water networks in the Southern Hemisphere, delivering services to over 5 million people across New South Wales. The utility manages hundreds of reservoirs, treatment plants, and pumping stations, many of which are aging and located in densely populated areas. Sediment buildup, algae blooms, and biofilm can compromise water quality and infrastructure integrity. To address these issues, Sydney Water implemented robotic cleaning systems to reduce service interruptions, minimize chlorine usage, and comply with increasingly stringent health and environmental regulations.
The Challenge
Sedimentation and silt build-up in open-air reservoirs was impacting water clarity and requiring frequent cleanouts. Traditional methods meant stopping water flow, draining reservoirs, and losing valuable resources.
The Weda Solution
The VR-600 allowed cleaning while the reservoirs remained full. Operated remotely, it removed sediment without stirring up the water column or affecting water distribution to residents.
