Twente University – Netherlands

“Collaborating with Weda on a research prototype gave our students hands-on access to next-gen robotic technology.”
— Professor of Civil Engineering, Twente University

Twente University is a leading Dutch technical university known for its research in civil engineering, robotics, and water management. The institution operates experimental tanks and reservoirs used in hydrology and environmental studies. These tanks require frequent cleaning to remove test debris, sediment, and biological growth, but cannot be drained due to ongoing research cycles. Twente adopted robotic cleaning systems to maintain operational integrity of its experimental setups, providing consistent baseline conditions while demonstrating the utility of real-world automation to its engineering students.

The Challenge

The university required a robotic system for experimental sediment removal studies. They needed a remotely operated dredging robot that could be adapted for research and lab simulation environments.

The Weda Solution

Weda co-developed a prototype robot with Fulcrum Robotics and Twente’s research team, based on the YT-600 platform. The modified unit was tested in controlled environments and has since served as a model for academic-industry collaboration.
